Hope Downs 4 Rio Tinto mine site warehouse flooring

Completed for Rio Tinto's Hope Downs 4 Mine Site in the Pilbara, Western Australia, this 1,640 m² warehouse flooring project replaced costly traditional concrete with the Rombus flexible concrete pavement system.
Durable, dust-free industrial floor designed to withstand heavy machinery
The Rombus concrete pavement system delivered a durable, dust-free warehouse floor for a remote Rio Tinto mining operation, significantly reducing construction costs, material requirements and project downtime.

Designed to withstand heavy machinery while minimising major earthworks, the solution provided a more efficient, sustainable and long-lasting alternative to traditional concrete flooring.
  • $480,000 Cost Saved
  • 127 tonne Carbon Avoided
  • 9 tonne Plastic Utilised
  • 20 days Reduced Downtime

The Challenge

A warehouse required a sealed floor to minimize dust. Traditional options, like reinforced concrete (250mm thick) and asphalt, were cost-prohibitive due to high material and mobilization costs. Concrete prices could exceed $1,000/m³, while asphalt struggled with wear from wheel screwing.

The Rombus system, using a 32 MPa concrete mix, was chosen to provide a durable, dust-free, and gravel-free solution. This innovative approach offered a more cost-effective and long-lasting alternative, addressing both performance and budget concerns.

The Solution

Rombus provided a dust-free, gravel-free wearing course that addressed the specific challenges of remote mine sites. The system minimised the need for extensive mobilisation of equipment and reduced material costs, offering a practical, long-lasting solution to the floor sealing problem, while enhancing performance standards and reducing maintenance issues.

The solution simplified construction while providing a reliable, low-maintenance surface for remote mine sites.
