Container terminal flooring for Aurizon in West Kalgoorlie

Rombus delivered a fast, cost-effective hardstand rehabilitation solution for the Aurizon West Kalgoorlie Container Terminal, restoring 1,846m² of deteriorated pavement without full reconstruction while reducing downtime, construction costs, and carbon emissions through the use of the Rombus modular pavement system.
Innovative hardstand rehabilitation without full replacement
The existing hardstand at the Aurizon Kalgoorlie Container Terminal had deteriorated under continuous heavy vehicle traffic, leaving damaged concrete and uneven interlocking pavers.

Instead of undertaking a costly full reconstruction, Rombus stabilised the affected areas and installed its modular pavement overlay system over the existing surface. This innovative solution restored the hardstand with minimal disruption, providing a faster, stronger and more sustainable alternative to traditional pavement replacement.
  • $350,000 Cost Saved
  • 173 tonne Carbon Avoided
  • 10 tonne Plastic Utilised
  • 7 days Reduced Downtime

The Challenge

The hardstand at Kalgoorlie Container Terminal, composed of interlocking pavers and reinforced concrete, has deteriorated under heavy vehicular loads, including quad road trains and full-laden reach stackers. The interlocking pavers have deformed, causing uneven surfaces, while the reinforced concrete has deteriorated to the point of exposing steel reinforcements.

The Solution

Instead of a costly and time-consuming full reconstruction, Rombus provided an innovative solution that minimized downtime, costs, and carbon emissions. By stabilizing deformed areas with a sand mixture and overlaying the existing concrete and interlocking pavers with our modular system, we delivered a faster, stronger, and more sustainable alternative to traditional repairs.
