There Are Two Types of Concrete. Cracked… and Soon-to-Be Cracked.
It’s a saying every concreter in Perth has heard before because it’s true.
Concrete doesn’t fail because of poor workmanship. It fails because of physics.
In Western Australia’s dry, reactive soils and intense summer heat, even the best poured slab will eventually move. And when it moves, it cracks.
That’s why Rombus exists not to replace concreters, but to give them something better to work with.
Why Concrete Cracks in Perth
Perth’s climate is one of the harshest for rigid pavements.
- High daytime temperatures cause expansion.
- Cooler nights cause contraction.
- Clay soils swell in winter and shrink in summer.
Every slab experiences stress from below and above, and rigid concrete has no way to absorb it. Reinforcement delays the problem it doesn’t solve it.
That’s why cracks form even in perfect pours.

Introducing the Third Type of Concrete: Flexible Concrete
Rombus is the first modular flexible pavement system designed for the same jobs that would normally demand a rigid slab.
Each panel is made from 96 percent recycled Australian polypropylene, measuring 1000 by 1000 millimetres and only 40 millimetres thick.
Once installed and filled with a 32 MPa concrete mix, the surface performs like a slab but behaves differently under stress.
Instead of resisting movement until it fractures, it absorbs movement across its interlocking grid system.
Built for Perth, Tested Beyond It
Rombus isn’t theoretical. It’s been load tested beyond 10,000 tonnes per square metre, performing under conditions that would destroy most traditional slabs.
Because it is modular, it has a lower thermal mass, helping it stay cooler in Perth’s heat and reducing the expansion contraction cycle that causes surface cracks.
Manufactured in Adelaide and based in Perth, Rombus is locally made for local conditions, hot, reactive, and heavy duty.
Benefits for Contractors and Clients
- Faster installation and curing times
- Lightweight grids (approx. 5.35 kg each)
- Less concrete use per square metre
- No saw-cut joints or patching
- Cleaner look
- Reduced maintenance
- Sustainable, Australian-made system
It’s still concrete, just smarter.
The Future of Hardstands, Driveways, and Industrial Surfaces
From residential driveways to mining hardstands, Rombus offers a scalable system that handles heat, load, and soil movement without the cracking that defines traditional slabs.
There used to be two kinds of concrete cracked and soon-to-be cracked.
Now, there is a third.
